Rose Mary Slavik
October 6, 1918 – April 1, 2015
Rose Mary (Rachac) Slavik died April 1, 2015, at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague, Minnesota. She was born in Minneapolis on October 6, 1918 to Edward and Wilhelmina (Logelin) Rachac. Rose Mary attended grade school at St. Bridget’s Catholic School and graduated from North High School, both in Minneapolis. In her early years after high school, she was employed by Prudential Insurance Company and a munitions plant.
On a visit to her grandparents in New Prague, she met her future husband, Raymond J. (Sam) Slavik. They were married at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Minneapolis on May 18, 1946. They made their home in New Prague and co-ran the Slavik Furniture and Linoleum Store. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years, raising 3 girls and 4 boys. As the children grew, she spent more hours working at the store. She later worked at Suel Printing Company from January 1979 to August 1990. She also worked as a sub for Helen Schoenecker at Eugene Wann’s law office.
Rose Mary belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and the Fireman’s Auxiliary. In addition, she was a lifetime member of New Prague Local VFW Auxiliary, joining in 1954. She was the local president in 1970-71 and the Past 2nd District President from 1987-88. Rose Mary also enjoyed bridge club, sewing club, gardening, canning, knitting, and hosting family holidays. She had a love for crossword puzzles and she was a voracious reader.
Rose Mary is survived by her children, Barbara Nytes-Baron of Houston, TX, Nancy & Roger Musil of New Prague, MN, Greg & Lynn Slavik of Eagan, MN, Steph & Pat Murphy of Lake City, MN, Robert Slavik & friend, Val Wiebold of Rochester, MN, Phill Slavik of Robbinsdale, MN; grandchildren, Doug & Donna Nytes of Sugarland, TX, Rachel & Allison BondBaron of North Bergen, NJ, Eve Musil & friend, Mitch Venne of Gilbert, AZ, Sarah Musil of Aurora, CO, Stuart & Dawn Musil of Shakopee, MN, Cal Musil of New Prague, Alexis & Brad Jenkins of St. Paul, MN, Bridget & Art Hoffman of Kellogg, MN, Emily Murphy & fiance, Ilya Shchegolve of Rochester, MN, Kevin & Angie Murphy of Lake City, MN; great-grandchildren, Maddie Nytes, Aidan, Kiera, & Payton Musil, Rozlyn Jenkins, Reagan, Declan, & Kilian Hoffman, Kruno Murphy; sister, Peggy & Tom Ritter; 10 nieces & 4 nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond J. (Sam) Slavik on September 25, 1994; son, Jeff; grandson, Terry Nytes; son-in-law, Richard Baron; parents, Edward & Wilhelmina Rachac; infant brother, Robert; brothers-in-law, Alfred Slavik & wife, Bea, Ralph Slavik & wife, Mary Ann (Svobodny); sister-in-law, Irene (Slavik) & husband Dr. Martin Nordvedt; 2 nieces, Annie Roth & Dorothy Ward.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 10:00 AM at St. Wenceslaus Church with Father David Barrett officiating. Visitation will take place 1 hour prior to service at church. Serving as pallbearers will be sons, Rob, Greg, & Phill Slavik, sons-in-law, Roger Musil & Pat Murphy, grandsons, Stu & Cal Musil, Kevin Murphy, grandsons-in-law, Art Hoffman, Ilya Shchegolve, Brad Jenkins, great-grandson, Aidan Musil. Placing the Pall will be granddaughters, Eve & Alexis Musil, granddaughters-in-law, Angie Murphy, Allison BondBaron, Dawn Musil, & friend, Val Wiebold. Readers will be granddaughters, Bridget Hoffman & Rachel BondBaron, daughter-in-law, Lynn Slavik, great-granddaughter, Kiera Musil. Bringing up the Offertory gifts will be daughter, Steph Murphy, granddaughter, Emily Murphy, great-granddaughters, Payton Musil & Reagan Hoffman, great-grandson, Declan Hoffman. The eulogist will be daughter, Barb Nytes-Baron. Burial will take place at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery with lunch following at the Legion Clubroom in New Prague.
