Ray Dohmen
September 18, 1932 – January 29, 2015
Ray Dohmen, age 82, of Montgomery, formerly of New Prague, died Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Traditions of Montgomery. Ray was born September 18, 1932 in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, to Anton J. & Christian A. (Niebur) Dohmen. The family moved to the New Prague area and he went to school first at St. Wenceslaus Catholic School and then New Prague High School. He attended Dunwoody Institute and later took classes from Normandale Community College. Ray served in the US Army from 1952 – 1954; at the time of his discharge, he was a Sgt. in Battery B 71st AAA Missile Bn. On July 1, 1954, he married Dorothy L. Hardin in Ft. Belvoir, VA and the couple celebrated 60 years together this past July. Ray farmed for 12 years and then moved into town and worked for MVE for 22 years as a maintenance manager. The couple then bought and operated the Union Hill Bar & Restaurant for 12 years.
Ray was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, a member of the State KC Degree Team, and the American Legion. He loved farming, woodworking of any kind, playing cards, camping, deer hunting, and fishing. On one of his fishing excursions, he caught a meteorite with his hook and went so far as to take his find to the U of M, where the experts confirmed it’s authenticity. Most recently, Ray enjoyed making door stops and framing pictures.
Ray is survived by his wife, Dorothy Dohmen of Montgomery; children, Monica Dohmen of Baudette, Steven (& Wendy) Dohmen of Le Sueur, Nancy (& Richard) Unger of New Prague, Philip Dohmen of Montgomery, Greg (& Stacy) Dohmen of New Prague, Tim (& Connie) Dohmen of Gardena, CA, Jean (& Todd) Listul of Brainerd, Chris (& Delilah) Dohmen of New Prague; siblings, Jane Schmitz of St. Paul, Armella Hinderscheid of New Prague, Albin (& Marion) Dohmen of Monett, MO, Claretta Schmitz of Montgomery, Myron (& Mary Lou) Dohmen of West Memphis, AR, Marilyn Odenthal of Arlington; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Dohmen of Sacramento, CA, sister-in-law, Bernice Dohmen; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; sons, Michael A. Dohmen, Joseph (in infancy); son-in-law, Murray Schmitz; siblings, Robert and Dennis Dohmen, Rita Wiley.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, February 2, 2015 at 12:00 noon at St. John’s Catholic Church in Union Hill with Father David Barrett officiating. Visitation will take place from 8:30 – 11:30 AM at Bruzek Funeral Home. Since burial will occur at a later date, military honors will be conducted outside of church following mass. Lunch will follow at the KC Hall in New Prague.
