Helmer Winter
March 31, 1934 – January 28, 2016
Helmer Winter, age 81, of Webster, died peacefully with his wife at his side, on Thursday, January 28, 2016, at Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center in New Prague. Helmer was born March 31, 1934, in Canby, MN to Otto F. and Elizabeth (Zieche) Winter. He grew up in Canby, attending a country school. He entered the US Army in 1957, served active duty until 1959 and then served in the Reserves until 1963. On May 11, 1957, Helmer married Ethel Joy Fliss in Canby. He farmed and then worked as a machine maintenance operator for Hitchcock Industries. Helmer belonged to the American Legion. He was a gentle man, who loved his hobby farm and tractor. He and Ethel Joy enjoyed traveling together. Helmer loved time with his grandchildren and was noted for always having Doublemint Gum to share with them.
Helmer is survived by his wife, Ethel Joy of Webster, MN; sons, Keith (Adriene) Winter of Colorado Springs, CO, Kirk Winter of Waconia, MN; siblings, Luella Schilz of Chaska, MN, Lyle (Doris) Winter of Browerville, MN, Darlene (Myron) Anhalt of Canby, MN; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Kevin Winter; daughters-in-law, Deb and Laurie Winter; brother, LeRoy; sister, Shirley Ann (in infancy).
A memorial service will be held Monday, February 1, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Bruzek Funeral Home, with visitation 2 hours prior to service, beginning at 9:00 AM. Burial will occur at a later date. Military honors will take place after the service at the funeral home. Lunch will follow at the Legion Clubroom in New Prague.
