Dr. Carl Burkland
July 3, 1942 - April 20, 2023
Dr. Carl E. Burkland, age 80, of New Prague, died peacefully at his home with his family at his side on Thursday, April 20, 2023. Carl was born on July 3, 1942 in Sacramento, California, to Carl Edwin and Lucille Marcella (Klein) Burkland. He grew up in Carmichael, California and migrated eastward to begin his college career, getting his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He returned to California to continue his education at the University of California at Davis for his Master’s degree and then returned to the University of Iowa School of Medicine to finish. He did his residency at St. Paul Ramsey Hospital from 1970-73. He married his helpmate, Kathleen A. Gaughan, on September 23, 1972 at Maternity of Mary Catholic Church in St. Paul, MN. After his residency, the couple came to New Prague where Carl’s devotion to his family and medical life would start and remain for the duration of his life. Medicine and service to community defined Dr. Burkland. He was a member of the Hennepin County Medical Society and the American Academy of Family Practice. A private man, he was devoted to his children and grandchildren. After retirement he enjoyed gardening and landscaping in his yard and watching classic movies, possessing quite an impressive array of favored black and white movies. He was an avid Gopher football fan and attended a good portion of the home games. He loved being a part of the New Prague Community and found fulfillment in being an active citizen up to the time of his death. Dr. Burkland felt truly honored to be given the opportunity to care for his community through the practice of medicine in New Prague for over 40 years.
Dr. Burkland is survived by his wife, Kathleen of New Prague; daughter, Laura Holmes of Apple Valley; son, Dr. Carl “Barney” ( Ashley) Burkland of Madison Lake; grandchildren, Campbell Holmes and Charlie, Oliver, and Eden Burkland; sister, Mary Berg of Minneapolis. He is preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Jon Holmes; sister, Signe Burkland.

I’m way too late to this process, as I just learned of Carl’s passing today. I knew Carl as an upper classman and fellow inhabitant of the Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity at the University of Iowa. He was a unique character with an infectious enthusiasm for everything from medicine to Big Macs. Carl had an unconventional approach to life. He was a carpe diem guy before the movie. one example – he once showed up unannounced on my doorstep in Boston one Sunday afternoon where I was doing a 2 month preceptorship in anesthesia. I don’t know how he… Read more »
I still have a deformed toe because of him. lol As a child and until I moved to college, Dr. Burkland was my doctor. I generally liked him and I remember him being a no-frills, factual kind of doctor that would cater to the desires of the patient/family. My mother and father recall him often having two socks that never matched. Going back to my toe… I had an ingrown toenail on my left big toe when I was a preteenager. After having part of the nail removed and some of the skin, it had regrown over the gauze. My… Read more »
Our sympathy to you and all the family for your low. I have the fondest memories of being a patient of Dr. Burkland years ago, and of babysitting for your family. May the joy and love your shared bring you peace and keep him close to you always.
Kathy, Laura and Barney, it’s just by chance that I saw Carl’s obituary. Jim and I are so sorry for your loss. Carl was the very best of doctors. Our confidence in him knew no bounds. I still speak of his photographic memory and diagnostic skills. He is sorely missed. Carol and James Bradley from 817 Gooseberry Lane.
It was so nice to hear from you I often remember you and your family fondly It would be nice to meet for lunch sometime Thanks for remembering us Kathie
Dr. Burkland was our family doctor since 1989 until he retired. At my very first appointment with him, he sent me to Abbott for an angiogram because he suspected I had a rare kind of tumor in my neck. He was correct. It had been missed for many years with my previous doctor. Many years later, I asked him how in the world he ever caught something so rare that the U of M had only seen two cases and Rochester had only seen 12 and never in someone so young. He did that little chuckle and said he had… Read more »
Thank you for your kind thoughts
it was nice working with him sorry for your loss.
I was so sad to learn of Carl’s passing and I offer my condolences for the family. I am now so glad that I was able to visit Carl and Kathy last Tuesday. The two+ hours we three spent reminiscing were a great honor and now a cherished memory. We laughed as we recalled all of the times at QoP staff meetings. I think Carl said it best when he said the other doctors didn’t realize how much we respected each other. All the care Carl gave to the people of New Prague and surrounds is testimony to the strength… Read more »
I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and father of your children.
Dear Kathy and family. Our condolences to you and we are sorry for your loss. Dr. Carl’s passion and medical knowledge are beyond legendary. He always made a point to be there for his patient. Carl, save a place up there for the rest of us.
Dr. Burkland treated 5 generations of my family … my grandmother, my mother, myself, my children and 5 of my grandchildren. What a privilege to be part of those 5 generations. I always knew we were in the best medical hands because Dr. Burkland was relentless to find the answer to a medical puzzle. He was selfless doctor which I am certain took time away from his family. Know that we, his patients, appreciate your sacrifices so he could be a most beloved doctor.
I was Carl’s classmate and medical fraternity roommate at the U of Iowa in the 60’s. We toiled together in our MD studies, but had great fun times when we could. We jointly owned a small sailboat and a canoe, and played with those boats in the Iowa City area, and later at New Prague’s lake. What a sports enthusiast! Condolences to Carl’s family.
Our deepest sympathy to the family of Dr Burkland. We have fond memories of our time in New Prague in the mid-1970’s where we got to know the Burklands as residents of Maple Acres. RIP Carl, you will be missed.
