Ty Kenny Schoenbauer

October 26, 1998 - August 23, 2020

Ty Kenny Schoenbauer, age 21, of Wilkinsburg, PA, formerly of New Prague, died tragically by suicide on Sunday, August 23, 2020 in Pittsburgh, PA.  Ty was born on October 26, 1998 in Shakopee and lovingly adopted by Steven and Corrine “Connie” (Sticha) Schoenbauer.  He graduated from New Prague High School and attended Normandale Community College and Gustavus Adolphus College.  Ty was a naturally gifted scholar who learned easily and dabbled in many pursuits, such as learning new languages and exploring the stars and heavens in astronomy.  He had a gift for music, loved to sing and make music, trying out the guitar.  He was also athletic and loved hockey and soccer. He loved to try new foods and to travel, especially the favorite trips with his family to Alaska and Mexico.

Ty had a giving heart and his amazing empathy always saw him ministering to the disenfranchised and those hurting in spirit.  He was especially attached to the foster children that his parents took in and always felt like his “best friend” was leaving when that child left their home.  He could be found on the floor totally engaged with his nieces and nephews, reveling in the joys of their play. Ty could help others but couldn’t help himself.  Against his family’s hope but with their blessing, Ty moved out to Pittsburgh in August of 2019 to find/meet/live with his birth mother.  He had struggled for quite some time with his identity being adopted and an Asian in a predominantly white community.  His kindness, his compassion for others, his smile in better times – the footprint he has left in his short life is deep and will be forever missed.

Ty is survived by his loving parents, Steve and Connie Schoenbauer of New Prague; siblings, Shannon (Matthew) Giesen of New Prague, Seth (Kellie) Schoenbauer of Savage, Lexi Rose (Clare Saunders) of Minneapolis, Kylie (Danny) Grimmer of Andover; nieces & nephews, Jack, Claudia, Sam, Kate, Gavin, & Lenny; grandfather, Leonard Sticha of New Prague.  He is preceded in death by his brother, Joseph; grandparents, Rose Ann Sticha, Alfred & Julia Schoenbauer.

Private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, September 1, 2020.  Burial will take place at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Duck Cup Memorial Fund (duckcupmemorial.org)

Ty was a wonderful and bright person. I remember giving him a tour and showing him to his new residential hall at Gustavus Adolphus College. Then, we had class together my last semester in college in 2018. With every person comes a message and a page of growth. Ty’s life has taught me a lot about people, happiness, and mental health. He will always be remembered for the many great things and memories he’s left behind. Rest In Peace, Ty.

Steve and Connie, I discovered this news on Thursday and no words or tears can express how deeply shocked, saddened, and heartbroken I am by Ty’s tragic passing. It has been difficult to process the emotions I have been feeling considering he was so special to me. I can’t imagine what you both and the rest of the family are going through. I wish I could give you both a tight hug. The words above are nicely written and describes the Ty I remember so well. Throughout my time spent with Ty in and outside of college, he has shown… Read more »

I never met Ty, except watching him in church with your family. I thought to myself how wonderful God is that he put Ty in your hands….. so much love there.
He sounded like a wonderful boy with many gifts, that you no doubt nurtured.
Praying for peace and healing.

Steve, Connie and family,  Gene and I were so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved son, Ty.  There are no words we can say to lessen your pain and sorrow of this tragedy. “Against his family’s hope but with their blessing”….Ty knew you loved him just by your actions to let him choose his future. May you find peace in that decision. Over the years you have made many priceless memories…Memories don’t take up much room, they don’t have to be packed, you can’t lose them and no one can ever take them from you. Our thoughts… Read more »

Steve (and Connie),
Last week, Reed told me of a delightful conversation he had with you, Steve…catching up on old times and also of Ty’s decision to move to PA. And now this. My heart is crushed for you and your family with this news. My hope that the pain, sorrow and suffering this tragedy has caused will soon be replaced with the wonderful memories of all the good times you had with him. I am so sorry for your loss. “Against his family’s hope but with their blessing”, this statement says it all. We don’t get to pick our children’s path, our job is to love and support them. Ty was obviously loved and supported by his family and I’m sure he felt that love and support every day. We are so sorry for your loss.
