Leona Weiers

February 7, 1929 - August 18, 2024

Leona E. Weiers, age 95, of Montgomery, formerly of Union Hill, died peacefully in her sleep, on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at her home at Traditions of Montgomery. Leona was born a twin on the family farm in Derrynane Township on February 7, 1929, to Mathias and Barbara (Klinkhammer) Giesen. She grew up and spent her entire life in the Union Hill area and graduated from New Prague High School. She married Edwin “Speed” Weiers on September 10, 1949, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Union Hill and very successfully raised a beautiful family of 14 children.

Leona was a member of the Altar Society at St. John’s, sang in the church choir, and belonged to Catholic Aid. She had a strong work ethic and the spirit of generosity, volunteering at the Peace Center for many years. In whatever spare time she had with her busy family, she enjoyed bowling, embroidering, quilting, and card playing. She was an avid reader, enjoying especially history, westerns, and romance novels. Her family was the center of her world and to her very last day, she knew the name of every one of her 45 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren. She was the cement and the heart of this dynasty and her presence will be deeply missed.

Leona is survived by her children, Kathleen (Dave) Wessel of Montgomery, Karen (Steve) Melena of Pine City, Patty (Tony) Hauer of New Prague, Pam (Lyle) Lundstrum of Bird Island, Judy Deutsch (Dave Baird) of New Prague, Jeanne (Roger) Wacker of Montgomery, Cheryl (Jim) Dingels of Gibbon, Charles (Laura) Weiers of Le Center, Jim (Carol) Weiers of New Prague, Janet Weiers of New Prague, Tony Weiers (Cindy Londin) of New Prague, Ann (Rick) Stocker of Jordan, Lora (Vinnie) Angileno of New Prague, Lois (John) Masberg of Kilkenny; 45 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marian Svoboda of Bloomington and Bernice Hauer of St. Paul; sister-in-law, Edna Weiers of Belle Plaine. She is preceded in death by her husband, Speed Weiers on January 1, 2003 and son-in-law, Ron Deutsch.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church in Union Hill with Father Eugene Theisen officiating. Visitation will take place Wednesday from 4-7 pm and Thursday morning from 7:30-9:15 at Bruzek Funeral Home. Burial will occur at St. John’s Cemetery, followed by lunch at the KC Hall.

Memorials preferred to St. John’s of Union Hill Improvement Fund.

14 kids with 108 littles! What a legacy! The fact that she knew all their names is a testament to her love of family. What a wonderful and full life she must have had. Our sympathy to each of you. Losing a mom cuts deep. You are in our prayers. Matt and Joyce Hartman
