Lawrence L. “Larry” Sirek

November 6, 1935 - December 20, 2019

Lawrence L. “Larry” Sirek, age 84, of New Prague, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, December 20, 2019 at Three Links Care Center in Northfield, MN.  Larry was born on November 6, 1935 in Wheatland Township, Rice County, Minnesota to John J. and Anna (Malecha) Sirek.  He graduated from New Prague High School in 1953 and served in the US Army from 1955-56.  After his service in the Army, he married the love of his life, Mary Jo Chromy.  They raised their family on the family farm, which he farmed until 1985.  He worked construction and served as the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor for New Prague Area Schools until retiring in 2009.  After retirement, he looked forward to his day of the week at Lonsdale Hardware where he helped out his son and enjoyed greeting customers that made it a point of coming in when he was there.  He was a member of the American Legion and a board member of Wheatland Township for many years.  He and Mary Jo enjoyed traveling together in their years of retirement before her death in 2012.  He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and reading in his spare time.  His greatest joy was following the activities and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  He cherished time sitting around the kitchen table with family and friends and sending his guests home with the fruits of his garden when they left the table.  No one ever left empty-handed.  His warmth, his smile, his generous spirit will be missed by so many!

Larry is survived by his children, Mary Sue (Bob) Ambroz of New Prague, Carol (Brett) Erath of Shakopee, Russ (Deb) Sirek of Lonsdale, Jan (Bob) Hrabe of New Prague, Randy (Kim) Sirek of New Prague; sisters-in-law, Marion Sirek of Lonsdale and Elsie Sirek of Northfield; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo on June 15, 2012; son, Roger; great-granddaughter, Aleah; parents; brothers, John F., Robert, and George Sirek; sisters, Lillian Simon and Elsie Simota.

A Memorial Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, December 27, 2019 at 6:00 PM at Bruzek Funeral Home with Deacon Leonard Shambour officiating.  Visitation will take place from 3-6 PM prior to the service.  Burial will occur at a later date but military honors will be conducted by the New Prague Area Veterans Honor Guard immediately after the service at the funeral home.  Lunch will follow service at the KC Hall.

Larry brought many days of joy to so many at New Prague Area Schools. We were not always prepared for his antics, but when they happened to you, you knew he thought you were someone special. We (I) always looked forward to “Larry’s Broccoli Dip” in the staff lounge, and I’m honored to have that hand written recipe he groaned about writing down. Bless you and your family!

Our sympathy on the loss of your dad. So glad we were able to spend time with Larry last Thursday. We will be spending Christmas with family in Colorado so will not be attending the service. Sending you thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for the voice message yesterday. Dad said that the two of you stopped to see him last week. I know he treasured your friendship.
Enjoy you time with your family!
Merry Christmas
