Katie Berg

April 10, 1980 - April 9, 2021

Kathryn M. “Katie” Berg, age 40, died peacefully with her family by her side, just one day shy of her 41st birthday on April 9, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.  Katie was born on April 10, 1980 in New Prague to Paul and Mary Lee (Shonka) Berg.  She attended St. Wenceslaus School, graduated from New Prague High School, graduated from Argosy University in dental hygiene, and attained her B.S. from Minnesota State University Mankato.  Katie had an indomitable spirit, enjoying dance in her younger years and music all her life.  Her love of musicals provided many wonderful evenings at the theater with her mother.  She enjoyed needlepoint and cooking, and was especially proficient at baking and decorating cakes.  Her nieces and nephews were the center of her life and she was a faithful supporter of their sport events.  Travel spurred the adventurer in her personality and in 2012 she was thrilled to have traveled to London, Ireland, and Scotland.  Katie’s radiant smile and the twinkle in her eyes will be sorely missed by her loving family and friends.

Katie is survived by her parents, Paul & Mary Lee Berg of New Prague; brothers, Paul (Terri) Berg of New Prague and Matthew (Melissa) Berg of New Brighton; nieces & nephews, Nathan, Sarah, Eric, Gabriella, Michael, & Syl; godparents, Shelly Tietz & David Shonka; godchild, Sarah Berg.  She is preceded in death by her grandparents, John & Therese Berg and Doug & Alice Shonka.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 11:00 AM at St. Wenceslaus Church with Father Eugene Theisen officiating.  The general public may enter church beginning at 10:40 AM.  Masks and social distancing are required.  Mass will be live-streamed on npcatholic.org.  Burial will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.

Katie and I danced together for years in New Prague and were in musicals together in high school. She was always had such a kind and gentle presence at a time of so much social insecurity. I always appreciated that when I was in classes with mostly older girls, Katie’s friendship felt like a safe harbor.
