Janice Peterson

August 31, 1945 - February 12, 2025

Janice Elaine Peterson, age 79, of Norwood Young America, formerly of New Prague, died peacefully with her family at her side on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at The Haven at Peace Village in Norwood Young America. Janice was born on August 31, 1945, to John and Lorraine (Spartz) Huss. She attended Minneapolis Public Schools and graduated from Roosevelt High School. One fine day, as she was sunbathing, a young man came along, noticed her and was smitten. Russell Peterson brought her a pillow to make her more comfortable, and it was love at first sight. They were married in Minneapolis on February 20, 1965. Janice was a woman for whom time had no limitations and her energy was boundless. She was tough, strong and determined with a heart that was loving and huge, encompassing anyone and everyone who came into her orbit. Janice was stern, but kind and generous in raising not only her own children, but two nephews and four grandchildren. Her home was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay and she was the go-to person if someone needed a listening ear.

A true “jack-of-all-trades”, Janice worked in many occupations throughout her life. She was a machinist and worked assembly for Midwest Brass for many years. She also worked with her dad and brother in home construction, mainly in remodeling and home improvement. Her nurturing spirit was instrumental in helping her daughter in her daycare business and as a PCA for several years. She was an accomplished and beautiful seamstress, making wedding dresses and notably, cloth-bodied dolls that were sold through Hallmark and JC Penney. The guardian angels that she made were not only sold but given as treasured gifts to the babies that came into her life. Janice’s family was the cornerstone of her life and everything revolved around them. She enjoyed nothing more that hosting and making amazing dinners for those fortunate enough to grace her table. The legacy that she left was huge and will live on in the amazing family that mourns her loss.

Janice is survived by her loving husband, just shy of 60 years, Russ Peterson of Norwood Young America; children, Damon (Lynn) Peterson of Blaine, Rene (John) Bendzick of New Prague, Chad Peterson of Montgomery, Teresa (Derek) Petersen of Oak Grove; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Dianne Magner of Melrose; sister-in-law, Mary Huss. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jack, Larry, Lenny Huss.

Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM at FaithPoint Lutheran Church in New Prague with Reverend Dr. Steve Trewartha officiating. Visitation will take place at church from 9:00-11:00 AM. Lunch will follow the service at church. Burial will occur at a later date at Pleasant View Memorial Gardens in Burnsville.

My love and prayers go to Russ and their beautiful family. Russ and Janice were a big part of our lives in the 70’s and 80’s. Memories I will cherish forever. We spent a lot of days and into the evenings at their big house in Mpls. Always so warm and loving. You will be deeply missed but in our hearts forever.

Love,
Lynn Peterson Johnson

Janice was a childhood friend along with our sisters. Her family lived next door and we did lots of stuff together—including many sleep-overs, backyard bar-b-ques and the occasional talent show. My heart goes out to her family for the loss of this precious woman. I know she is at peace in the arms of our Lord. I hope they can take comfort from this.

Such beautiful memories shared and still sharing Rosie. Was a wonderful childhood shared there. Will always remember the four of us girls singing. I know she is at peace and many welcomed her home.

I grew up living next door to Janice and the Huss family. This was in the 50’s and into the 6o’s. We used to have sleepovers – switching houses from time to time. Both of our older sisters joined in.
Janice and I continued a few times during high school. She was supposed to be in my wedding (Dec. 1966), but she was about to give birth!
Last time I saw Janice she was so much fun.
God made you, Janice, on purpose to be a purpose. You fulfilled it magnificently. Rest forever in peace my friend.

Janice her heart was bigger then the sun above. We had so many laughs and heart felt conversation. She gave me a pineapple plant and I thought is was the most amazing thing in the world. Two months later the plant sadly died we had to laugh about it because we both had no idea to take care of a pineapple plant even tho it was a little crispy when she gave it to me I still took it so I could make it live a happy life but I had no idea what I was doing we just laughed..… Read more »

So pleased I got to be withJanice and so many of her family last week when we cousins visited. She was huge on inviting us all to your celebrations and yes, the food was incredible. She did make food for a small army! I remember that she sewed band outfits for my husband Stuart, when he played drums with Russie in SunBurst. She and I never lacked for something to talk about when we spoke. I loved her always. My heart is with you all. Love you.. cousin Patty

We will miss our dear, loving sister-in-law. She could do anything and do it with incredible skill. She was a never-ending source of love, especially for the children. Russell couldn’t have found a better partner. She even sewed outfits for his band! There was never a job too big for her. She passed that quality, and many more, to her family. She was a source of wisdom for us and we always knew we would get truth from her. We will miss her and remember the good times like the all night card games when we were young. We thank… Read more »

Janice was an amazing person that spent her life caring for her children and grandchildren. She provided so much love and care. She was a very talented person as well, I will remember the times we worked on her Christmas crafts and the family gatherings. She will be truly missed by so many.

Damon, Rene, Chad, Teresa –
My deepest condolences to you and your families. I had known Janice & Russ for most of my life. They were always welcoming, warm, and kind hearted. And Janice treated me like one of her own nieces. She will be sadly missed but you can bet she’s smiling down on all of you.
