Gilbert Schoenbauer

July 31, 1937 - April 26, 2019

Gilbert Ray Schoenbauer, age 81, of Jordan, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, April 26, 2019, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital. Gilbert was born on July 31, 1937 in Helena Township, Scott County, MN to William and Walburga (Busch) Schoenbauer.  He was raised in the St. Benedict area and attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School and New Prague High School and was a member of the US Army Reserve.  He married the love of his life, Shirley Valek on May 10, 1958 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lonsdale.  The couple made their home on the family farm in rural Jordan, where they raised their nine children.  Gilbert was a passionate, hard-working dairy farmer and also did woodworking for Wildwood.  Gilbert was a 4thDegree Knights of Columbus, a member of the St. Benedict’s Men’s Club and an active volunteer with the Church of St. Benedict and the K of C’s.  He served as a trustee for St. Benedict Church for many years.  He was a board member of both AMPI and New Prague Co-op.  A devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a skilled craftsman, enthusiastic golfer, skier, fisherman, card player, joke teller, master of solitaire on the computer and an incredible handyman who enjoyed the challenge of fixing whatever was brought to him – he was all these things and so much more. He will be missed dearly.  His family was the highest priority in his life and brought him the greatest joy.

 

Gilbert is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; children, Mary (Vic) Holec of Mendota Heights, Donna (Donald) Cochran of Sebring, FL, Laura Schoenbauer  (Patrick Cornette) of St. Paul, Karen Schoenbauer of Forest Lake, Dolores Schoenbauer (Daniel Hart) of Centerville, Judy (Beaulin) Liddell of Little Falls, Christine (Mark) Oliver of Minneapolis, William (Gillian) Schoenbauer of Mendota Heights; son-in-law, Steven Merwin of Maple Grove; 17 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; siblings, Ralph Schoenbauer, Mildred (Richard) Dehlinger, Lillie Gravelin, Shirley (Dick) Schwisow, Jerry (Pat) Schoenbauer; brother-in-law, John McDonald; sisters-in-law, Rose Ann Schoenbauer, Cathy Schoenbauer.  He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Frances Merwin; siblings, Andrew, Melvin, and Wallace Schoenbauer, Carol McDonald, and William, Helen, & Maryann all in infancy.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 3, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. Scholastica Catholic Church in Heidelberg (31525 181st Ave., New Prague. From New Prague:  Take MN-19 west/Main St W approximately 3 miles.  Turn left or south on CR-30/181st Ave.  Go south on CR-30/181st Ave approximately 3 miles until you are about to enter the small hub of Heidelberg.  The church will be immediately on the left or east side of CR-30/181st Ave.)  Father Kevin Clinton officiating.  Eulogy will be delivered in church at 10:15 AM.  Visitation will take place Thursday from 4 – 7 PM and Friday morning from 7:30 – 10:00 AM at Bruzek Funeral Home (610 E. Main St., New Prague).  Lunch will follow at the KC Hall in New Prague. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the St. Wenceslaus Western Catholic Communities
