Dorothy M. Barten

May 1, 1936 - September 4, 2020

Dorothy M. Barten, age 84, of New Prague, died peacefully with her husband at her side on Friday, September 4, 2020 at Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center and Assisted Living.  Dorothy was born on May 1, 1936 in Green Isle, Minnesota to Fred and Lydia (Dreier) Hebeisen.  She attended parochial school in Green Isle and graduated from Arlington-Green Isle High School.  Dorothy worked for Pillsbury for a few years before marrying the love of her life, John J. Barten on November 3, 1962 in Minneapolis.  The couple made their home in New Prague, where Dorothy did in-home day care for many years and helped John do the books at his business, Barten Standard.   Dorothy was a member of the Eagles Club.  Her life revolved around children, the children in her daycare, her own, and babysitting for the grandchildren that graced and filled her life.  She enjoyed sewing, creating quilts for members of her family.  In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and throughout her life, she loved shaking dice and playing cards with friends and family and was a member of a euchre club.


Dorothy is survived by her husband of 58 years, John; children, Joe (Peggy) Barten of New Prague, Lynn (Troy) Townsend of Montgomery, TX, Tammy (Thomas) Villagomez of Mankato; grandchildren, Danielle (Matt) Huseby, John Barten, Steven, Tara, & Michael Townsend, Gavin Villagomez; great-grandchildren, Kipsyn & Bryson; brother, Richard (Noreen) Hebeisen; sister-in-law, Clara Hebeisen; brother-in-law, Jim Mundt.  She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Chester, Marvin, Fritz, Alloyd, Floyd, & Earl; sisters, Violet, Valeria, Myra, & Marion.


Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 18, 2020 at 11:00 AM at FaithPoint Lutheran Church in New Prague with Reverend Dr. Steve Trewartha officiating.  Visitation will take place at church from 9:30 – 11:00 AM.  Masks are required in church and social distancing will be practiced during the visitation and service.  Lunch will follow at the KC Hall.  To live-stream Dorothy's service, please visit:

Mary and I were very sad to hear that Dorothy has died. We enjoyed her and “Jocko’s” friendship for many years as neighbors. Our thoughts and prayers go to her family.
