Bud Kager

June 3, 1942 - April 24, 2025

Rodney “Bud” Kager, age 82, of New Prague, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, April 24, 2025. Bud was born on June 3, 1942, in Los Angeles, CA, to Clyde and Ione (Wolstad) Kager. The family settled in Minnesota and Bud graduated from Bloomington High School. He served in the US Navy and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Naval Air Station in Olathe, Kansas in 1967. Years later, while working at Browning Ferris Industries (BFI) as Operations Manager, he met the woman who would capture his heart! The two purchased an 80-acre farm, rented out most of it but maintained enough to create an enormous garden. He and Helen enjoyed pickling and canning the fruits of their efforts, supplying the family with produce for years. He married Helen L. Weiers in Le Center, MN, on November 3, 1998.

Bud’s gregarious personality, natural charm, and his ability to easily engage in conversation brought out an ability to connect with whomever he happened to meet. Once Bud met you, he considered you a friend. He was easily recognized with his signature bib overalls and ready smile and was generous with both his time, talents, and possessions. He and Helen enjoyed golfing together and making wood-crafted items for sales at various craft fairs. Any leisure time could find him with a fishing rod in hand or a good game of cards with friends and family playing Euchre or cribbage. An avid reader, he enjoyed history, Tom Clancy spy novels, and authors like Robert Ludlum and Clive Cussler. Bud engendered positivity and inclusivity. His light, love, and laughter will be sorely missed certainly by his family but also by all whose path he crossed.

Bud is survived by his wife, Helen, of New Prague and his children, Kelly Kager of Lutsen, Vicki Niss of Minnetonka, Kevin Kager of Lutsen, Mike Niss of Webster; grandchildren, Mirranda, Allie, Brandon, & Lexi; great-grandchild, Brooklynn; sisters, Miriam Last of Welch, MN & Judy Suelter of South Carolina. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Todd "Scooter"; brother, Tim.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the KC Hall in New Prague from 1-5 PM.

My deepest sympathy. I am going to miss Bud, he was a great guy. He always stopped to talk to me whenever I was outside. My granddaughters will also miss him, last year he was giving them rides on the golf cart, they loved it so much. He was such a sweet man, always had a smile, I will miss our talks that we had. Bud fly high my friend!
Helen, my friend you take care, we will get together and visit.
Love, Your neighbor,
Carol
