Mary Jane Svobodny, age 73, of Bloomington, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at The Lodge at Summit Oaks in Burnsville.  Mary was born on November 27, 1944, in New Prague to William S. and Helen Elsie (Kajer) Svobodny.  She attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School and graduated from New Prague High School.  She worked in inventory control for Control Data Corporation and Magnetic Peripherals.  She was a woman of many interests.  In her early years, she played softball and was an avid skier.  Her love for the outdoors continued throughout her life in her travels and love for gardening.  She enjoyed attending farmers’ markets and loved to cook the fruits of her gardens and market purchases.  Mary was famous for her care packages to her great-nieces and -nephews.  She loved playing cards and volunteer work was extremely important to her.  She spent many hours helping out at local food shelves and church.

Mary Jane is survived by her sister, Shirley Scheffert of Montgomery; sister-in-law, Diana Svobodny of New Prague; nieces & nephews, Mark (Roxanne) Scheffert, Scott (Diane) Scheffert, Doug (Patty) Svobodny, Mary Kay (Kevin) Keohen, Deb (David) Griffith, Donna (Dale) Hanson, Susan (Bryan) Broholm; 16 great-nieces and –nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Bill & Helen Svobodny; step-mother, Mary Ann Slavik Svobodny; brother Richard “Dick” Svobodny; brother-in-law, Karl Scheffert.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Bruzek Funeral Home with Pastor Dean Swenson of Hosanna Church in Lakeville officiating.  Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to service from 9-10 AM.  Burial will occur at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery and a lunch will follow at the Legion Clubroom.
