Joseph C. Soukup, age 90, of New Prague, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center.  Joe was born September 14, 1926, in New Prague, to Joseph and Emma A. (Sempaur) Soukup.  He graduated from New Prague High School and attended the University of Minnesota, where he studied forestry.  He entered the US Navy in 1944 and was stationed on the West Coast, where he began his 45-year career with the US Postal Service.  He married Margaret “Margie” David on April 24, 1951 in Lonsdale, MN and the couple made their home and raised their children in New Prague, where Joe would serve as a postal carrier, retiring in 1990.  Joe was a member of the American Legion and served with the New Prague Fire Department from 1954-1985, serving as past 1st Assistant Fire Chief.  Music was an important hobby to Joe; he played trombone with several local bands, most recently performing with the Hi Hats on his 90th birthday; he was also a proud member of the New Prague Community Band. He was a man of many interests.  In his younger years, he played town baseball and bowled with leagues at the West End.  He loved gardening, stamp collecting, crossword puzzles, and playing cards, especially euchre, sheephead, and darda.  Every Friday he enjoyed going to Canterbury Downs with friends to watch horse racing.  Hunting and fishing rounded out his interests but time with his family was his top priority.

Joe is survived by his children, Greg (Mary) of New Prague, Patty (John) Majors of Hatfield, IN, Jerry (Sheila) of Anchorage, AK, Del Mae (Leroy) Pavek of Lakeville, Tom (Joy) of New Prague, Jim (Mary) of Eagan; grandchildren, Joe Soukup, Dan Soukup, Ron Krantz, Karen (Dennis) Lyerla, Matthew Soukup, Michael Soukup, Melissa (Mike Duncan) Pavek, David (Kelly) Pavek, Chris Pavek, Elliot Soukup, Charlie Soukup, Rachel Soukup, Leah Soukup; great-grandchildren, Autumn, Jostyn, Paul, Wesley, Wyatt, Ella, Scarlett; sister, Emily Marshall of Dade City, FL.  He is preceded in death by his wife, Margie on March 14, 1996; granddaughter, Julia Soukup; brother-in-law, Jim Marshall.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017, at 11:15 AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, in New Prague, with Father Kevin Clinton officiating.  Visitation will take place from 4-8 PM on Friday and from 9-11 AM Saturday morning at Bruzek Funeral Home.  Following Mass, burial will occur at Czech National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.  Lunch will follow at the KC Hall.
