Paul Franzen, age 82, of Union Hill, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at The Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine on Saturday, November 26th.  Paul was born on April 16, 1934 In Minneapolis, MN to Adam and Ida (Fleischman) Franzen.  He grew up on a farm outside Loretto, MN and attended Rockford Public Schools until transferring to Northwestern Electronics, a trade school in Minneapolis.  Paul married Rosemary Vossen on June 23, 1956, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Mound, MN.  The couple lived in Edina for 13 years, during which time he worked for Honeywell as an electronics technician.  They then bought a farm in Belle Plaine and had both dairy and beef cattle.  He also worked as plant maintenance engineer at Empak in Shakopee for 10 years.  Finally, he operated his own small business, Franzen Electric Machine, which he initiated in 1997 and worked until present day.  An outgoing and friendly man, his business often saw friends and neighbors gathered in his shop; he was so appreciative of all of them.  He was a man of varied interests; he loved animals and music, especially old time and polka.  His love of music led him to join  the Czech Area Concertina Club.  Finally, he had a life long interest as a ham radio operator, renewing his license as recently as this year.

Paul is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosemary of Belle Plaine; children, Michael Franzen of Le Sueur, Mary Ann (Mark) Felmlee of Le Sueur, Jeanmarie (Norman) Neher of Elko New Market, Jon (Marilyn Nichols) Franzen of Belle Plaine; sisters, Joan (Arnold) Nimps of Kasota, Charlotte Blakeborough of Wayzata; brother, Joseph Franzen of Belle Plaine; 8 grandchildren, David, Holly (Jordan), Daniel, Melissa (Matt), Jacob, Nathaniel, Isaac, Steven; 3 great-grandchildren, Paige, Evangeline, Avery.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Adam & Ida Franzen; daughter-in-law, Anna Franzen; grandson, Timothy Pearson; brother and sister-in-law, John & Linda Franzen.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, December 1, 2016, at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church in Union Hill with Father David Barrett officiating.  Visitation will occur for 2 hours prior to Mass also at church, beginning at 9:00 AM.  Burial will take place at St. John’s Cemetery immediately after Mass followed by lunch at the KC Hall in New Prague.
